Firstly there was The Album Before The Album, and then came the album after that, Twisted Revolution. Now signed to a new label, Twissman is back to claim his spot in the charts with a fresh sound and a summer anthem.

GlitterBow: First of all just tell us what you’ve been doing? You’ve been away for quite a while…

Twissman: Basically most recently I got signed to a label called Zy Records and I did an album with them, with a producer who’s formerly of Def Row called ‘Woo’ Allen- I’ll tell you a little info, it’s a 14-track album it’s got like some massive American and Swedish artists on it, it’s got Sway on it and a big Konvict collaboration as well. So that’s really what I’ve been working on just being in the lab with that. And then more recently I’ve come with the single, my new single with Tayong called The Way She Moves.

G: That tunes all about being in a club and admiring a girl, so what I want to know is if you’re in a club and you see someone nice, how do you approach her?

T: It’s not even a thing, I’m just watching the eye contact obviously, make sure the feeling’s mutual and then just roll over whisper a little, couple beautiful comments in her ear and we’ll see what’s going on. Make her feel a bit special.

G: That’s all good! The single definitely has a different sound to what people are probably used to hearing you on, are you trying to leave grime behind and experiment a bit more?

T: With me, I Can Take The Rain, Life’s Journeys and Women’s Psychology, they’re not the grimiest tunes they’re more like real life, and Women’s Psychology was even a slow jam, so I’m really versatile and I’ve seen that trends change and what’s needed in the game right now is that kind of music so I’m just moving with the trend.

G: What would your response be to people that are criticising artists for ‘selling out’ and going commercial?

T: I would basically say to stop being so small minded, because why can’t they give them credit as in to say people like Tinchy and Chipmunk are entrepreneurs for their age because they thought out the box. Grime’s a progression, it’s like a phase. So obviously if we spit grime and then we get older, everyone in grime’s talking about knives, but we don’t feel like we need to talk about that anymore, so if we get older and want to encapsulate a lot of people’s minds, the best way to do that is to hit a world-wide target audience, and people really are not listening to grime too much these days. Basically Chipmunks getting sales, I’m getting sales, everyone’s getting sales so you have to congratulate them really.

G: What’s the feedback that you’re getting off the single right now? Is it all good?

T: You know what I take criticism well, but I haven’t had one bad comment to my face. Obviously online there might be a few but everyone’s really liking the vibe and saying it’s a summer hit.

G: How did the collaboration with you and Tayong come about?

T: Ok it was a mad situation in Luton with me, Tayong and Aggro, and then something happened but then we put it all behind us and me and Tayong just started working with each other. We decided in a month to do an album, and we did an album in like two-weeks together.

G: Seriously?!

T: Yeah, yeah we did it quicker than expected.

G: A lot quicker! There must’ve been some mad chemistry from the beginning then…

T: Definitely every time we get in the studio there’s mad chemistry, there’s just hits straight away.

G: What’s he like then? Because he’s an artist, songwriter, a producer…

T: For a artist, I knew everyone in the industry and he’s one of nicest personality wise, he’s a very nice, well-spoken guy and thoughtful as well.

G: So I know the album like you said is in construction right now but have you got a date roughly when that’s coming out?

T: What it is, there’s no date but I know there’s going to be four single releases, it’s called This is Twissman, it’s definitely got Sway on it, definitely got G-Frsh on it, and definitely got Jimmy B on it. There’s a massive collab called Sumo on it, so look out for that tune as well.

G: What’s the vibe of the album going to be like? You’ve said you’re versatile…

T: Yeah it’s completely- you might even say its completely commercial, but there’s real tracks as well, and there’s a lot of girl tracks, a lot of club girl tracks, a lot of party tracks, yeah it’s kinda versatile.

G: A lot of people like myself don’t know a lot about you before Channel U and before you came out with your music, you were quite a big sportsman I hear…

T: I played all throughout my school and college- I played Rugby for Middlesex, South-East England. In London Scottish I won loads of medals- I gotta call them out still…I did play football when I was young, but I went to a posh school and they never did no football!

G: Also some people don’t know that you were stabbed quite viciously, how old were you when that happened?

T: I was like 17, 18, I was going to college and all that and I was just starting up my music and there was a lot of hate and it just happened.

G: How did that experience change you?

T: It just made me appreciate things, and made me appreciate my family and made me appreciate going for my musical dream, because I always had it as a little hobby but I was doing Law and Business and all that for A-Level so I was really focused on that, so I just stopped college completely and just focused on my music.

G: Who were the artists you were looking at, at that time? Who was out doing big things?

T: Oh like D-Double, he’s the don init and Kano, and Dizzee Rascal straight all day!…I used to like N.A.S.T.Y Crew a lot and then a year later, I just started meeting up with Stormin, Nasty Jak and all that, and it was just crazy I was meeting people that I was actually loving a year ago so it was nice man.

G: The UK music scene obviously is in a weird way and like I said earlier a lot of artists are getting criticism, but who do you rate musically?

T: Musically I’m gonna shout out three people from South like Giggs, Aggro and Tinie Tempah because I know all of them, and really and truly none of them would’ve expected this two-years ago, that’s all I’m saying. They’ve done really well, Aggro’s charted top-five UK, Tinie Tempah hit number-one. Other than that Chippie, Tinchy- I rate the people who are taking themselves out of the hood.

G: So what can we expect from you in the future? What are you going to be adding to the scene?

T: Wow, complete realness, I just relate my life and other people’s life. Obviously I’m looking to be doing lots of tours so everyone will get to see me and just basically supply music that everyone likes.

The Way She Moves is OUT NOW!

Following the release of his debut album, New Day, I caught up with UK man of the moment, 25-year-old, Chima Anya, for the exclusive on all things hip-hop.

GlitterBow: The album came out not so long ago, 10th May I believe, so what’s life like for you at the moment?

Chima: Life is very busy at the moment, like promoting an album, same time having a full-time job and then having life commitments. But you know, you can sleep when you’re dead man, so that’s it just enjoying life, making the most of it.

G: If we take it right back, what were some of your earliest memories of music?

C: My earliest memories of music were back in the 90s. My dad had the Salt n Pepa Very Necessary CD and back then hip-hop wasn’t as prominent as it is now. I remember as a child bouncing around to that tune and being confused by all the sexual innuendoes, and then ‘95 I moved down to Oxford, Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise that came out on the radio and I was so heavily into that and then ‘97 was when I bought my first CD which was Mase Harlem World and then from there I started rapping.

G: Describe your sound for people because as soon as I listened to it, it did remind me of the early ’90s stuff…

C: I’d say it’s soulful, like you said the foundations are there and that real hip-hop stuff, but at the same time it’s still very contemporary, relevant and progressive. There are slight electronic undertones, Eye Choose You has got a bit of an electronic bassline and New Day has quite a lot of synths. The way I’d describe my style really is just: style, substance and swagger.

G: I’ve been on the net and seen a lot of comments like, ”The doctor’s here to fix hip-hop’…

C: Yeah no doubt. Obviously hip-hop’s in a bad way I’m not gonna lie to you, there’s not much space for a rapper like me in today’s climate, they’d rather listen to Tinie Tempah or Chipmunk- it’s definitely not healthy, but you can’t say it’s dead! As long as people are doing it and they love it then who are you to say it’s dead?

G: So are there any UK artists you’re feeling at the moment then?

C: UK rapper? I guess Ty, he’s got an album out now which sounds good…I came across this new artist literally a few days ago called Jai Paul and he’s just incredible man, you can tell he’s got a heavy hip-hop influence…But there’s definitely UK artists that I’m feeling, but unfortunately the mainstream doesn’t give them that much space to shine, which is unfortunate because diversity can only enhance the scene, it’s not gonna bring it down.

G: You discuss a lot of different issues through your music, where do you get your inspiration from?

C: I just get my inspiration from life…you get exposed to a wide variety of people and their lives and their situations…and emotions as well, feelings of elation, celebration, despair, hope, frustration. All of those are definitely very inspirational feelings.

G: You wrote the whole album! Was that an important element for you to have complete control over that process?

C: Well you have to man, it’s me I’m putting out there. I can’t let anyone else represent me but me. There were definitely some creative differences during the creation of the album which were stressful and the version of the album you see is very different from the version of the album other people might’ve liked but that’s me!

G: You’ve got quite a few collaborations on the album, was there anyone in particular you liked working with?

C: I mean obviously Soweto…He’s a great mcee and obviously he’s quite an established artist, but yet he still reaches out to artists who aren’t as established as himself and doesn’t come at them with any type of ego. He’s just down for music and I respect that a lot. Having Soweto on the album was a great pleasure and honour for me and I’m thankful he got involved. He’s got an album coming out this year too, so it’s a good year for hip-hop.

G: Just something that I’ve noticed, why did you choose to spell Eye Choose You the way that you did?

C: That’s a very good point and initially it wasn’t my choice to spell it like that, but it just stuck. You know what- I should have changed that!

G: I thought it was the doctor coming through…

C: Actually Astrosnare who produced most of the tracks on there, he called it that and he really liked it for some reason. But when it came down to doing the artwork it wasn’t even something I thought about, but thinking about it now I honestly would’ve preferred it to be spelt with an ‘I’ as opposed to an ‘Eye’. Maybe if I had a reason why it was an ‘I’ I’d be happier with it.

G: Maybe! So what’s the audience response like that you’re getting at the moment?                                      

C: The response has been pretty positive really and truely from the people that have listened to it. The problem is, I mean this isn’t me complaining, but getting people to listen to music nowadays is difficult…an album is a whole, you’ve got to take an hour out of your day to just digest it all and a lot of people don’t have time for that…it’s reached some places that I didn’t expect it would reach, but I don’t think enough people have listened to the album to be honest, but that’s what the next couple of months are going to be about.

G: What’s the video you’re planning on putting out next?

C: It’s a song called Hey on the album. It’s quite jovial- it’s a bit more dancefloor friendly than a lot of the songs on the album, you can have a little jig to it, it’s quite a minimalist percussion led track. So we’ll see how it goes down.

G: Finally, if people were only allowed to listen to the album once, what would you want them to absorb from it?

C: I’d want them to wake up and realise that the hip-hop they’re being fed at the moment is pretty rubbish and that there’s so much better rap music out there. Maybe you have to dig a little, but they’ll be far more rewarded by supporting these other artists as opposed to these plastic empty artists who are getting so much love at the moment.
